Alice's Evidence: a most unusual trial between the books
Alice's Evidence draws the eye through a succession of Gothic arches into a courtroom that feels solemn and absurd in equal measure. At the far end, the Queen of Hearts presides beneath a large illuminated clock, while Alice, the White Rabbit and playing-card guards stand among files, books and bewildering exhibits.
The narrow perspective turns the scene into a narrative passage. Black, red and bronze establish the atmosphere, while hearts, spades, clocks and the chequered floor connect its different levels into one dramatic setting.

Recognisable characters in the midst of the scene: Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and playing-card guards occupy different planes and guide the eye towards the back of the courtroom.
